What Usually Goes Wrong on a Rush Job
I coordinate emergency jobs at a precision machining shop. This checklist is what I actually run through before saying yes to any rush job. It's saved us from rework, penalty clauses, and one very expensive courier bill.
If you're about to quote a rush order, don't skip ahead. The first step takes 20 seconds; the last step has saved me more than the first six combined.

1. Define the Real Deadline
In March 2024, a client called at 3:30 p.m. and said they needed parts "tomorrow." I asked what time tomorrow. The answer was 8 a.m.—their test started at 8:30. That meant shipping overnight wouldn't work; the part had to be on their bench before the lab opened. We finished by 7 p.m. and they sent a courier. If I'd accepted "tomorrow" and shipped, we would have missed the window.
Ask three questions: Do they need parts in hand, or just out the door? What time of day is the actual deadline? Who has to be present to receive it? Checkpoint: write the date and time in their time zone, not yours.
2. Verify Machine Specs From the Source
The first thing I do is go to the DMG MORI official website (dmg-mori.com) and pull up the exact machine model. I don't trust memory. Last quarter, I caught a 0.1 mm tolerance risk before we ever loaded a bar because the machine's actual spindle runout spec was listed there, not in the brochure. The question most buyers ask is "is the machine fast enough?" The better question is "can it hold the tolerance over the length of the part?"

3. Break the Job Into Operations
A DMG MORI turning center with driven tools can turn, mill, and drill in one setup. That's a huge advantage for a rush order because every setup change is a chance to introduce error. But I've also seen jobs where the turning operation was fast and the second operation—say, a keyway on a manual mill—became the bottleneck.
Write down every operation in sequence. Include programming time, tool assembly, material prep, and first-piece inspection. If you can't explain the process to someone who's never run the machine, you haven't thought through the order. What I mean is, if the process has a "somehow" step, you're not ready to rush it.
Checkpoint: the total cycle time is less than half of your available time. If not, adjust or decline.
4. Add Setup and Inspection Buffer
Rush jobs fail at setup, not at cutting. I learned that on a $4,000 overnight job where the part was cutting in 90 minutes, but we spent three more hours chasing a live-tool offset. The actual machining was fast. The setup and the inspection wasn't.
When I quote a rush, I put aside 30% of the total time for setup, first-article inspection, and cleanup. That's not pessimistic. That's what it takes to avoid sending a bad part only to have the customer discover it the next morning.
Checkpoint: schedule the inspection time before the deadline, not after.
5. Build Fixtures Before the Machine Goes Dark
This is the step most people forget. A rush order is not just about cutting metal; it's about workholding. If the standard chuck jaws work, fine. But custom fixtures from a vendor usually take days—and you have hours. That's where 3D printing earns its keep.

6. Use Exact Language for Delivery
This is where I've messed up most. I said "it'll be done Thursday." They heard "Thursday morning." Result: a courier waiting at our dock at 9 a.m. while the part was still in the machine. It wasn't their fault; it was ours. We were using the same word but meaning different things.
Now I say "ready for pickup at 5 p.m. Thursday" or "shipped overnight for Friday delivery." Then I ask the customer to repeat it back. Yes, it feels a little elementary. But an informed customer asks better questions and makes faster decisions—and a customer who repeats the delivery time doesn't show up early.
Checkpoint: if the customer can't tell you the exact day and time you agreed on, the agreement isn't real.
7. Create a Plan B for the Riskiest Operation
Every rush job has one operation that makes you nervous. For me, it's usually a thin-wall turning operation or a deep boring bar. The Plan B might be a second setup with a different tool, a slower feed rate, or a completely different machine. It doesn't matter what the backup is, as long as it doesn't require a vendor lead time.

The common mistakes are almost never about machine speed. They're about material arriving too late, inspection being skipped, and someone saying "it'll be close enough." I've learned from each one. Now I treat the material supplier like part of the production schedule, and I treat inspection as a step that cannot be skipped.
Don't take a rush order if the material isn't confirmed. Don't promise a delivery time that you can't back with a named person who will be there. And please, don't ask for a rush quote without the CAD drawing. It saves both of us a phone call later.
I'd rather spend ten minutes explaining why a tolerance is hard to hold than guess and send a bad part. An informed customer makes a better decision—and a better customer. That's the whole point of this checklist.
